The planets represent core human energies, the signs show how those energies are "wired" into us, and the houses show the areas of life we tend to express or experience these energetic parts of ourselves.
That's the very short version of it.
How many of us have read our Sun Signs in a newspaper or on the Net and said, "That is SO off-base," or "That was so right-on!"
There are usually more comments agreeing with the former. Here's why...
Astrologers look at a minimum of 10 heavenly bodies when interpreting a chart, the sun being only one of those 10. As mentioned before, each heavenly body (referred to as such because the sun and moon are not planets) correspond to a piece of our being or consciousness that seems to be affiliated with a particular vibration or frequency. We think of them as a core energy.
The sign in which a planet/body is located in a birth chart (there are many other kinds of charts) tells us how that energy or functional bit of individual consciousness is wired into the person for expression; generally water = emotional, earth = physical/material/mundane, air = mental/expressing thought, fire = abstract/inspirational/active.
For example, the moon (a core energy) in a birth chart is associated with our gut (among other things). Gut instinct, gut feelings and emotions, our sense of emotional security (ever have the rug pulled out from under you emotionally and feel as though you've been punched in the stomach as a result?) This is the moon part of us.
The person with their moon in a fire sign needs to be active and moving to fully express or off-load their emotional energies. The moon in an air sign type person needs to talk out their emotional energies. (We'll get to the houses in a later blog.)
Remember your high school english class (verbs, nouns, etc.)? Think of the planet/body as a noun and the sign a planet is in as the adjective that describes the noun.
And something for a later blog I'd like to just touch on for now:
The reason astrologers put such emphasis on the sun and moon in a birthchart is because the sun is said to correspond to a central wiring of the conscious mind and awareness. This corresponds to our sense of "now" and being in the present. The moon is said to correspond the subconscious mind which is associated with the sense of our past and our comfort zones and inner child (emotional programming stemming from past experiences/memories).
So...our conscious and subconscious minds. Mighty important parts of us. In future blogs we will explore how science is actually beginning to prove certain things about astrology, consciousness, and different forms of psychic ability.
The bottom line is...we are so much more than our sun signs!
(stay tuned for how the 'all-knowing subconscious' blabs all our secrets when we dream, and how we can use that to our benefit.)
